Hello friends and happy Friday!
It’s been a really, really long time since I’ve done this but guess what: COTW is back! Let’s be real, I’ve missed our weekly lovefest and now that I feel comfortable in my schedule I’m definitely ready for this to be back. Plus, I met a really cool character this past week and it’s actually been killing me not being able to talk about them. Clearly, this character left enough of a mark on me to bring back one of my favourite weekly memes. Ah, it feels good to be back. I do have a couple changes in store for COTW and I’m excited to move forward with this. Anyways, let’s tease this week’s character. They were one that I initially was not really on board for but they are also a character that not only proved themselves to be my earned my respect in the long run. I loved how this character was written and I don’t think the story would’ve been the same without them.
This week’s character is…..
WHO IS THIS CHARACTER?
If you haven’t read Claire Legrand’s latest book, Sawkill Girls, you are definitely missing out. Valerie is one of the main characters in this book and has the biggest history with Sawkill. Her great-great grandmother had once made a deal with the devil after feeling so low that essentially sealed the fate for the rest of the women in this bloodline. They would serve this devil, or The Collector, and be his anchor and would really have no way out of his control. That is, until Val came in. Being under The Collector’s power and control is not what she wanted for herself or for her life to be and she wanted out. She wanted to live her own life and not continually hurt people she cared about. Val comes off as your stereotypical popular golden girl but really, there is so much more to her than that, and more than being The Collector’s puppet and slave. The thing that really got me with Val was her redemption arc and how she truly believed that she had to earn forgiveness, if she ever would, that is. She has such a strong conscious that doesn’t let herself get away with her actions with a simple apology. She is aware of what she did, and what she does in the future, and it’s something I truly respect about her. She’s also a great example/metaphor of how you can fight your inner demons and come out on top, truly defeating them. I love how Legrand wrote Val and how she treated her redemption arc and it has to be one of my favourites. I always love the story of the character who escapes their destiny and does right in the end but I feel like Val’s was extra special, and that’s why she deserves to be this week’s COTW.
“I’m…I’m sorry. [“You could say that for the rest of your life.”] Then I’ll say it for the rest of my life.”
A SONG THAT REMINDS ME OF THEM
Until next time,
