Hello friends and happy Friday!

This week has felt so long and I am beyond glad that it’s finally over and I can relax over the weekend. How are you all doing? I feel like I don’t ask that enough but I hope you’re all doing great. Anyways, I feel like this week’s character should be a bit of an obvious one given what I finished reading this week. I haven’t been able to stop singing their praises because they are one of the best characters I’ve ever encountered. I just can’t remember if I’ve done them before but if I did then they deserve even more love.

This week’s character is…

*drum roll*

Jude Duarte!

For those who don’t know, my girl Jude Duarte is the main protagonist from Holly Black’s Folk of the Air series, aka The Cruel Prince. I’m sure you all know how great this series is, whether you’ve read it or just by word of mouth and all the hype it gets (and deserves), so I don’t need to tell you that. However, I need to tell you all how great Jude is. I just talked about her a lot in my review for The Wicked King but I want to talk about her again because, as I said, it’s what she deserves. I guess the most important thing about Jude is the fact that she’s a human living amongst the fae in Faerie and actually longs to be a fae and be accepted by them. Given how they typically treat humans, that’s probably never going to happen. But Jude is determined to prove them wrong and prove that she does in fact belong. She shows that she can be just as deceptive and cunning and brilliant as the fae, and honestly it’s her humanness that allows her to do so. Jude, unlike the fae, has the ability to lie and can therefore turn things in her favour. Watching Jude lie is such an amazing spectacle that I could really read about her doing so for hours on end, which I guess is just reading the books again. But what really makes Jude great for me is how she is this badass-type character, but it’s not because she can fight and kill. She’s a badass because of how intelligent she is and how she’s constantly using her mind to get ahead of everyone. She is always planning and scheming to figure out how to get all the power for herself and gain the advantages, and her ability to be a great liar plays so well into this. I love how she’s this human girl that is seen to be weak and unaccepted by the fae essentially outsmart them every chance she gets and even has the most power in the land, since she controls Cardan. I would love to see more female characters be as intimidating as Jude, for the same reasons as Jude, because she’s so fascinating and layered and I don’t think I’ll ever not be enamoured by her.

“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”
